there is a lot of life overhaul happening for me lately, and I’m trying to make sense of myself in this iteration. and getting to know grief in a new way. and painting through it.

My sister/best friend/nanny, the hero of my heart,

My sister/best friend/nanny, the hero of my heart, was recently diagnosed with late stage (metastatic) triple negative breast cancer. She was given a year and a half, but she’s eligible for a clinical trial that will hopefully give us more time.

I can't find words for how heartbroken I am by this diagnosis. She is my person. She is the reason Randy and I moved to Maine in 2019, and she has almost single-handedly held my life and my heart together since he died. She gave up her career to help raise my son, and she’s the closest thing he has to another parent. I cannot imagine our life without her.

She's also a new mama - her sweet baby girl is only 8 months old.

still trying to get caught up on sharing sketchbook pages from the last couple of months.

something true: even though art is one of my top priorities in life, it is consistently difficult for me to find time to paint – even in smoother seasons, but especially now, in a difficult season like this one, when I have two family members receiving cancer treatment* + much less childcare than usual + a bonus little one to care for, on top of my regular duties as a solo mama + a small business owner.

But I am still an artist even so, and if you are a creator who doesn’t always have a lot of time to create, know that’s okay. We actually need periods of time way from producing - periods of consumption, rest, and gaining new perspective. Time to live the experiences that inform our work. Most of art happens off canvas. Don’t quit.
